Artist In Residence

Jay Hollopeter

Picture
Jay’s paintings come from a long time passion for humor, color and simplicity. He strives for art that is approachable, humorous, slightly biting and subversive all at the same time. His influences stem anywhere from early Japanese movie monsters and iconic super heroes, to old toy robots. Vinyl Art toys, Mexican folk art and classic monster movies, and from Tikis and aliens to cephalopods. His color choices are generally quite vivid and well thought out so as to uphold the whimsical and approachable style. He hopes to continuously move forward with these ideas, always keeping a bright and humorous bend to his work.

He likes to approach each piece with his sights set on placing the subject matter in situations or scenarios that wouldn’t normally befit such characters. You’ll see lots of puns, plays on words and odd situations for these little characters he comes up with. His use of color and humor helps to not only emphasize this, but it also adds to the whimsy, intrigue and depth of each piece. Jay’s graphic design background always had him pushing the idea of trying to add depth to what was largely a two dimensional medium. With his current work in oils, he’s striving to push that look of dimension with depth of shading and color.

Jay has a BA in Studio Art/Commercial Art from Southwestern Oklahoma State University (graduated Magna Cum Laude). He has 20 years experience with graphic design, illustration and logo design, both in print and electronic forms. He is based in Oklahoma City, OK. His concentration is currently focused on fine art and illustration. His work has been displayed at Art Market Gallery and räla Gallery both in Knoxville, TN, Red Z Gallery in Mount Vernon, OH, Scribner Gallery in Enid, OK, DNA Gallery in Oklahoma City, OK, Studio 616 in Oklahoma City, OK, Rusted Nail Gallery in Mesa, AZ, Zapow Gallery in Asheville, NC and at M Modern gallery in Palm Springs, CA.

Robert Hoggard

Picture
Robert was born and raised in Oklahoma City, OK. He worked as a computer specialist for years while fulfilling his creative urges in his spare time. He worked on an eclectic mix of projects, from over the top visual and mechanical Halloween displays and tiled mosaics to custom vinyl toys. After those many years as a full time computer specialist, he is now able to indulge his creative whimsy full time.

Most of his recent projects combine industrial themes with classic science fiction. Often these pieces entwine sculpture and electronics both to create a unique aesthetic that’s both three dimensional and interactive. In addition to sculpture, Robert also works with "public art" styled pieces in a format that is more suitable for "in home" display. He has work on display and in collections around the United States including Arizona, California, New Mexico, Florida, Michigan and Oklahoma.

Robert’s most recent artistic endeavor is Art Lab Enid. After moving back to Oklahoma from Florida in 2011, he started looking for a studio space that he could call his own. After a lengthy search for space in Enid, a perfect opportunity presented itself in the way of the historic Hale building. He set his sites on opening a place where other artists could also benefit from low cost studio space.
Studios he wanted to fill with other devoted artists who could help elevate each others' creativity; a place that would allow them to use each others' knowledge and enthusiasm in a mutually beneficial space. Art Lab Enid is that place.

You can contact Robert by email at: robert@artlabenid.com or purchase some of his pieces in our online store.

Matt Ohnesorge

Picture
Matt Ohnesorge is a military brat, and he has not always resided in Enid. He has always had an interest in art, especially drawing. He began his artistic career as a caricature artist at Busch Gardens Williamsburg in 1999. He continued drawing cartoons and caricatures for years and still continues to do so today.

After briefly studying architecture at Oklahoma State, Matt decided to leave the school and, like most artists, be a bum for a while. He currently attends the online animation school, Animation Mentor, and frames at Hobby Lobby to pay tuition. He loves drawing dinosaurs, and occasionally works on his always-in-development comic strip entitled, EGGS.

If you'd like to help Matt pay for school, you should have him draw you a dinosaur or something silly. He can be contacted at matt.ohnesorge@gmail.com

Josh Stebbins

Picture
Josh Stebbins is a native of Enid Oklahoma. Josh works predominantly with pen and ink (which he is certainly not limited to). He has been doing art, drawing and illustration since he was very young. Now at 30, with only basic art courses in school and college, he is able to foster his pursuit for progression while expanding his own creative horizons. He is very thankful these days to be recognized for all the work he has produced on his journey in life thus far.

In addition to his personal work, he does artwork for Black Market Art Company & Lowbrow Art Company, which are clothing companies featuring both up and coming and established artists. He also works closely with the local Enid printing company Privation Printing. Privation features Josh’s work on custom silk screens and clothing. He also hopes to venture further with gallery shows in the future.

Josh tries to convey in his style and subject matter a sense of duality, strengthened by his choice to work mainly in black and white. His subject matter presents undertones of beauty in darkness. These subjects can run the spectrum from religion to horror, often looking at the human experience, mostly from a darker side. Josh says of his work, “People generally realize it’s there [the darker side], but don’t want to face it…for me the garden of Eden has long since had a ‘Sorry, We’re Closed’ sign on its gate.”
